German graphic designer and typographer Otl Aicher (1922-1991) is known primarily for his work in the field of pictogram design, particularly his pictograms for the 1972 Munich Olympics. In 1984 he authored a book called Kritik am Auto (Critique of the Automobile), in which he argued that car design should prioritize functionality over aesthetics or status features. Aicher designed this poster for an exhibition in Zurich based on his publication, with cars in the style of his famous pictograms. The poster is in the collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
