This poster is one of many that Berlin design firm ott+stein (Nicolaus Ott and Bernard Stein) designed for the Bauhaus-Archiv.

Johannes Itten (1888-1967) taught the preliminary course at the Bauhaus, the legendary German design school, from its founding in 1919 until 1923. This 1994 poster for a Bauhaus-Archiv exhibition represents Itten’s time at the Bauhaus through the use of traditional Germanic typefaces, a nod to the more traditional approach of the Bauhaus school in its early days. These traditional typefaces (used for the word "frühe") create a striking contrast to the modern sans-serif typeface (used for the words “das” and “Bauhaus”) with which the later Bauhaus is so closely associated.
